As a primary host, it frequently interacts with fungi that cause devastating agricultural diseases. The most significant diseases affecting sour cherry are cherry leaf spot (caused by Blumeriella jaapii) and brown rot or blossom blight (caused by Monilinia species). These pathogens target specific tissues, with blossom blight aggressively destroying floral structures and leaf spot leading to premature defoliation. Additionally, bacterial and fungal infections can cause branch cankers and fruit rot, further threatening the commercial value of the crop.
The biological cycle of these pathogens is closely tied to the host's dormant season. Fungi overwinter as mycelium or spores within fallen leaves, mummified fruit hanging on branches, and bark crevices. When spring temperatures rise and moisture levels increase, primary spores are released, which are then disseminated by wind and splashing rain to healthy plant tissues, effectively initiating the infection cycle.

Excessive humidity, prolonged spring rainfall, and poor air circulation within the tree canopy create optimal conditions for fungal spore germination and penetration. Trees that are improperly pruned or overcrowded are significantly more vulnerable, as these conditions trap moisture and provide a stable environment for pathogen reproduction.

- Sanitation by removing and destroying fallen leaves and mummified fruit.
- Application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season.
- Strategic timing of systemic fungicide applications during the bloom and petal-fall stages.
- Annual pruning to ensure adequate light penetration and ventilation within the canopy.
The economic impact of these pathogens is severe, often resulting in massive yield losses and weakened tree health. Chronic infection reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which directly affects its ability to store reserves for winter, leading to increased susceptibility to frost damage and long-term decline in productivity. Proper management is essential to prevent these pathogens from establishing a permanent presence in the orchard.
