Soybean dwarf virus

Soybean dwarf virus (SbDV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Polerovirus within the family Solemoviridae. It is a persistent virus that primarily infects members of the Fabaceae family, causing debilitating systemic infections that severely impact plant morphology and physiological functions.

The virus predominantly affects soybean crops, as well as various leguminous fodder crops. Infected plants exhibit characteristic stunting, interveinal chlorosis or reddening of the leaves, and curling of the leaf margins. As the disease progresses, the plant architecture becomes dwarfed, leading to poor pod set and reduced seed weight, resulting in significant economic losses.

The biological cycle of SbDV is strictly dependent on aphid vectors, most notably Aulacorthum solani. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative, non-propagative manner. Once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life. The virus overwinters in perennial legume hosts, which act as a reservoir for the pathogen.

The spread of the virus is largely driven by the population dynamics of the aphid vectors. Outbreaks are often associated with cooler spring temperatures that favor aphid reproduction and migration from perennial weeds and pasture legumes into soybean fields. Once the virus enters a field, the rate of secondary spread depends on the movement of aphids between adjacent soybean plants.

Managing Soybean dwarf virus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach because there are no direct cures for viral infections once a plant is infected. Effective control measures include:

• Planting resistant or tolerant soybean varieties.
• Establishing spatial separation between soybean fields and perennial legume sources.
• Implementing rigorous weed control programs to eliminate virus reservoirs.
• Applying targeted insecticides to control aphid populations during the critical early growth stages of the crop.
