Description

Taxonomy and nature of the pathogen: The Soybean stunt virus (SSV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Ilarvirus within the Bromoviridae family. It is characterized by spherical particles and a single-stranded RNA genome. The virus is biologically distinct in its host range and symptom expression in legumes, often being identified in close association with the Cucumber mosaic virus complex.

Diseases and host plants: SSV primarily infects soybean crops (Glycine max). The disease manifests as severe stunting, leaf deformation, reduced pod set, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. While soybean is the main economic host, the virus can infect various other legumes, including beans, clover, and several weed species that act as environmental reservoirs for the pathogen.

Biology and life cycle: The virus is transmitted primarily by aphids (such as Aphis glycines) in a non-persistent manner, meaning the insect acquires the virus after brief probing and transmits it quickly to healthy plants. Another critical pathway of transmission is through infected seeds. This seed-borne nature makes the virus difficult to eradicate, as it can be introduced into new fields via contaminated sowing material.

Development and pathogenicity: The severity of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly temperature and aphid population dynamics. Rapid spread occurs during periods of high aphid activity. The virus causes significant economic damage by inhibiting plant growth and drastically reducing seed yield and quality. In severe outbreaks, the cumulative damage can lead to substantial losses in both seed weight and oil content.

Control and management measures: Since there are no chemical treatments available to cure plants once infected, management strategies focus entirely on prevention and mitigation:

  • Use of certified virus-free soybean seeds to prevent primary inoculum entry.
  • Effective insect management programs targeting aphid populations during the early stages of plant development.
  • Rigorous weed management in and around fields to eliminate host reservoirs.
  • Implementation of spatial isolation from other susceptible leguminous crops.
