Cucumber mosaic

Cucumber spp.

Description

Cucumber mosaic is a devastating plant disease caused by the Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). As one of the most significant plant viruses worldwide, it is characterized by an exceptionally broad host range, infecting over a thousand different plant species in both agricultural and natural ecosystems.

The virus affects a diverse range of crops and ornamental plants. Susceptible hosts include celery, fodder beet, hemp (Cannabis sativa), sweet pepper, watermelon, safflower, as well as various ornamental species such as the Persian cyclamen and the Carpathian bellflower (Campanula carpatica).

Symptoms of infection are diverse but typically manifest as a distinctive mosaic pattern of yellow and green leaf mottling, leaf distortion, vein clearing, stunting of the entire plant, and reduced fruit quality and yield. In severe cases, the entire plant may become chlorotic and necrotic.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. This means that aphids can acquire the virus after a brief probe of an infected plant and immediately transmit it to a healthy host. Mechanical transmission via contaminated tools or hands during pruning and harvesting is also a common pathway.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing infection, as there is no cure once a plant is infected. Key practices include utilizing virus-free planting material, breeding and planting resistant varieties, removing weed reservoirs that harbor the virus, and implementing rigorous aphid control programs to limit the spread of the pathogen.
