Spermoedia microcephala is a pathogenic ascomycete fungus belonging to the Clavicipitaceae family. It is recognized as a specific parasite that affects various grass species and cereal crops. Its biological function is characterized by the replacement of the host plant's ovary with sclerotia—hardened masses of fungal mycelium that serve as the pathogen's resting and overwintering structures.
The fungus is responsible for causing significant damage to cereal production by inducing conditions similar to ergot. Infected crops exhibit characteristic dark, horn-shaped sclerotia protruding from the florets. The economic damage caused by Spermoedia microcephala includes significant yield reduction and contamination of harvested grain with toxic alkaloids, which necessitates expensive cleaning processes or renders the grain unfit for food and feed.
The life cycle of the pathogen is complex and highly dependent on environmental factors. Sclerotia that survive winter in the soil germinate in the spring to produce stromata, which release ascospores. These spores are dispersed by wind and insects to the flowers of host plants. Furthermore, deep plowing helps bury the sclerotia, preventing their germination. Farmers are also advised to control weed grasses that act as alternative hosts and to apply fungicides during the pre-flowering stages to protect the most vulnerable period of plant development.
