Sphenospora kevorkianii is a basidiomycete fungus identified as a specific pathogen that causes rust disease in various species of the Orchidaceae family. It is recognized as a significant threat in commercial orchid cultivation and botanical collections due to its ability to weaken plants and reduce their aesthetic value.

The primary symptom of infection is the presence of characteristic rust-colored, powdery pustules on the foliage. These pustules represent the fruiting structures of the fungus, which emerge through the plant epidermis. Over time, these lesions cause the host tissue to yellow, wilt, and eventually die, severely impairing the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

The biological cycle of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Spores are primarily disseminated by air currents and splashing water during irrigation. Once they land on a suitable host under appropriate conditions of humidity and temperature, the spores germinate and initiate new infection sites, allowing the disease to cycle rapidly within a greenhouse environment.

Favorable conditions for the development of the disease include high relative humidity (above 70%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Poor air circulation in greenhouse setups significantly exacerbates the spread, as moisture persistence on the leaf surface provides the necessary water film for spore germination and successful colonization of the host.

Control strategies for managing Sphenospora kevorkianii involve an integrated approach. Essential steps include the prompt removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce inoculum levels. Furthermore, chemical control using appropriate systemic fungicides, combined with cultural practices such as improving airflow, spacing plants to avoid overcrowding, and avoiding overhead watering, is critical to containing the pathogen.
