Description

Sporisorium ehrenbergii is a pathogenic basidiomycete fungus belonging to the Ustilaginaceae family. It is widely recognized as the causative agent of sorghum head smut, a disease that specifically targets Sorghum species. As an obligate parasite, this fungus relies entirely on its host plant to complete its life cycle and produce new infectious propagules.

The primary symptom of this infection is the transformation of the host's inflorescence into a mass of black teliospores. Unlike other smut diseases, Sporisorium ehrenbergii affects the entire head of the sorghum plant. As the infected heads mature, the protective membrane ruptures, releasing a cloud of spores that contaminate surrounding healthy plants, soil, and machinery during harvest.

The life cycle begins when teliospores germinate to produce basidia and basidiospores. Infection occurs primarily during the seedling stage, specifically when the soil and environmental conditions allow the fungus to penetrate the coleoptile of the developing sorghum plant. Once inside, the fungal mycelium grows systematically throughout the plant's tissues, remaining largely latent until the host reaches the reproductive stage.

Favorable conditions for disease development include warm temperatures and adequate moisture at the time of planting. Optimal germination occurs between 20°C and 25°C. Because the spores are highly resilient, they can persist in the soil for several seasons, making the pathogen difficult to eradicate once it has become established in a particular field, especially if susceptible varieties are grown repeatedly.

Economic losses due to head smut can be significant, as infected plants rarely produce viable grain, leading to yield reductions that correlate with the incidence of the disease. Effective control measures focus on preventative strategies, including the use of high-quality, treated seed and the application of systematic fungicides. Furthermore, selecting resistant cultivars is considered the most sustainable and efficient way to manage this pathogen in modern agronomic practice.
