Description

Strawberry synchytrium (lat. Synchytrium fragariae) is an obligate parasite belonging to the phylum Chytridiomycota. This microscopic phytopathogen is classified as a protist that primarily affects host plants by stimulating abnormal tissue growth, resulting in characteristic gall formations on the plant's surface.

The pathogen is the causal agent of a disease known as red core or strawberry leaf gall. The infection is primarily identified by the presence of small, reddish to brownish wart-like growths that develop on the petioles, leaves, and runners of the strawberry or garden strawberry plants, often impairing the overall health of the affected plant.

The biological cycle of Synchytrium fragariae is heavily dependent on moisture. The pathogen produces zoospores that swim through a thin film of water to infect host tissues. Once inside, the pathogen triggers cellular hypertrophy, leading to gall development. The fungus survives unfavorable periods as resting spores, which can persist in the soil for several years.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and poor drainage significantly favor the development and dissemination of the disease. The pathogen spreads mainly through contaminated irrigation water, rain splash, or the distribution of infected nursery stock, which is a major concern for commercial berry growers.

The economic impact is linked to reduced vigor, impaired photosynthesis, and loss of productivity in infested fields. Effective management strategies include maintaining strict nursery sanitation, ensuring proper soil drainage, practicing crop rotation, and implementing integrated fungicide programs to suppress initial inoculum during the early growth stages.
