Taxonomically, the fungus is classified under the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Basidiomycota. Its life cycle involves the production of persistent teliospores that serve as the primary inoculum. Infection typically occurs at the seedling stage, where the fungus penetrates the plant tissue, subsequently growing systemically within the host until it reaches the reproductive organs during the heading phase.
