Description
Tilletia laevis is a species of smut fungi belonging to the order Tilletiales, recognized primarily as a major causal agent of common bunt or stinking smut in wheat. It is an obligate parasite that specifically targets the ovaries of wheat and other related grass species, drastically affecting grain quality and yield.
The primary symptom caused by this pathogen is the conversion of wheat kernels into dark, fragile masses of spores known as "bunt balls." These balls are filled with millions of teliospores and emit a foul, fishy odor caused by trimethylamine. During harvest, these balls break open, releasing spores that contaminate the healthy grain and persist in the soil for several years.
The infection cycle begins during seed germination. Teliospores present on the seed surface or in the soil germinate along with the seed. The fungal hyphae penetrate the young coleoptile and grow systemically within the plant without showing visible symptoms until the heading stage. At this point, the fungus replaces the grain contents with its own spores, completing its life cycle.
The development of Tilletia laevis is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly soil moisture and temperature. Infection is most severe when soil temperatures remain cool (between 5°C and 15°C) during the germination period. Dry or excessively warm soil conditions generally hinder the infection process, while cool, damp conditions promote high levels of disease incidence.
Control of Tilletia laevis relies heavily on integrated pest management practices. Key measures include:
- Using certified, disease-free seed lots.
- Treating seeds with effective fungicides to eradicate surface-borne spores.
- Practicing crop rotation to reduce inoculum pressure in the soil.
- Planting resistant wheat varieties that inhibit pathogen colonization.
