Plum rust (Tranzschelia discolor) is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the Basidiomycota division. As an obligate parasite, this fungus specifically targets various species within the Rosaceae family, causing the disease commonly known as rust in stone fruits, including plums, apricots, peaches, and almonds.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of small, yellow-brown spots on the upper leaf surface. As the infection progresses, the lower leaf surface becomes covered with rusty-brown pustules, which are the fungal spore masses. In severe infections, the pathogen can also affect fruit peduncles and young green shoots, leading to tissue necrosis and weakening of the plant structure.

The biological cycle of the fungus is complex and adapted to seasonal changes. The pathogen typically overwinters in the form of teliospores on fallen leaves. When spring temperatures rise and moisture becomes available, the fungus initiates primary infection. Throughout the growing season, it spreads via urediniospores, which can complete multiple infection cycles if humidity levels are high.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Tranzschelia discolor. The fungus thrives in warm, humid weather, particularly when temperatures range between 18°C and 24°C, accompanied by heavy dews or frequent rainfall. These conditions are ideal for spore germination and rapid colonization of the leaf tissue, often leading to sudden outbreaks.

The economic impact of this pathogen is significant due to premature leaf drop. This defoliation severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees, hindering the accumulation of nutrient reserves necessary for winter hardiness. Consequently, infected orchards experience reduced growth, decreased yields, and a higher susceptibility to winter freeze injury in subsequent years.
