Trichoderma harzianum belongs to the Kingdom Fungi and the genus Trichoderma. While this species is renowned as a biological control agent, it can act as a facultative pathogen under specific environmental conditions or in association with compromised plant hosts, leading to necrotic lesions and tissue decay.

The diseases caused by this pathogen typically involve root rot, collar rot, and damping-off. It is particularly problematic for vegetables, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as nursery seedlings. Symptoms include water-soaked lesions on the stems and roots, which eventually lead to wilting and the total collapse of the plant vascular system.

The biology of the fungus involves the production of abundant conidia, which are easily disseminated by irrigation water, contaminated tools, or infested soil particles. As an opportunistic pathogen, it utilizes an array of cell-wall degrading enzymes to penetrate plant tissues when the plant's natural defense mechanisms are weakened by biotic or abiotic stress.

Development and spread are favored by high humidity (often exceeding 80%) and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. In glasshouse environments, poor air circulation and waterlogged soil are the primary drivers of rapid disease expansion. The fungus can persist in the soil for several seasons, creating a recurring threat if sanitation is neglected.

Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This includes regular disinfection of greenhouse structures, ensuring proper drainage to prevent soil saturation, and avoiding the over-application of nitrogenous fertilizers. Monitoring plant health and removing infected debris early can significantly reduce the inoculum pressure in the field or greenhouse.
