The genus Trochila belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and class Leotiomycetes. This group consists of phytopathogenic microscopic fungi that specialize in infecting the leaf blades of various plant species, including both woody plants and herbaceous crops.
The primary diseases caused by members of this genus are leaf spots. The most well-known species is Trochila ilicina, which affects holly, though representatives of this genus can be found on a wide range of plant debris, acting as necrotrophic parasites that cause tissue necrosis.
The biology of the fungus is closely linked to the standard life cycle of ascomycetes. During the growing season, the pathogen produces apothecia — disk-shaped or cup-shaped fruiting bodies, often embedded within the leaf tissue. Inside these, asci containing spores are formed, which are released into the environment under favorable conditions to ensure the spread of the infection.
High air humidity and moderately warm temperatures are essential for the active development of the pathogen. The infection often spreads in dense plantings where ventilation is poor and foliage remains wet for long periods after rain or dew. The fungus typically overwinters in fallen leaves, remaining viable as mycelium or as mature fruiting bodies.
The damage caused by Trochila involves premature defoliation, which significantly weakens the plant, reduces photosynthetic activity, and impairs the decorative or economic value of the crop. In cases of severe infestation, growth retardation is observed along with a decline in the plant's overall resistance to other environmental stressors.
