Speckled snow mold

Taxonomy and nature of the pathogen: Typhula incarnata is a fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. It is widely recognized as a serious plant pathogen that causes the disease known as speckled snow mold, particularly devastating for winter cereal crops in regions with prolonged snow cover.

Affected crops and symptoms: This pathogen primarily infects winter wheat, rye, and barley. The diagnostic symptom is the appearance of gray or white mycelial mats on the plants shortly after snowmelt. The infected plant tissues eventually decay, and characteristic reddish-brown, pinhead-sized sclerotia develop within the mycelium, which serves as a definitive identifier for the fungus.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Typhula incarnata centers on sclerotia, which act as resting structures in the soil or on crop residues. When cool, moist conditions prevail in the autumn, these sclerotia germinate to produce basidiospores. These spores land on host plants and initiate infection, allowing the fungus to grow slowly but continuously beneath the snow cover throughout the winter.

Developmental conditions and impact: The pathogen thrives in cool, humid environments. Thick snow cover acting as insulation for the soil provides the optimal temperature range of near-freezing to 5°C. The damage is severe, leading to significant thinning of crop stands, loss of winter hardiness, and in extreme cases, total failure of the crop, necessitating expensive reseeding operations.

Management and control: Integrated pest management strategies are essential:

• Cultivating resistant crop varieties that show tolerance to low-temperature pathogens.
• Implementing effective crop rotation to reduce the inoculum level in the soil.
• Treating seeds with appropriate systemic fungicides before planting.
• Avoiding excessive fall growth to prevent the crop from becoming overly susceptible.
• Applying fungicides in late autumn if high disease pressure is expected.
