Description

The causal agent of bean rust is the fungus Uromyces appendiculatus, which belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota. It is an obligate biotrophic parasite that primarily infects various species of legumes, with the common bean being the most economically significant host for this pathogen.

Symptoms of the disease typically appear as small, circular, reddish-brown pustules on the undersides of leaves, and sometimes on stems and pods. As the infection progresses, the epidermis of the plant tissue ruptures, releasing a dusty mass of urediniospores, which can lead to leaf yellowing, chlorosis, and premature senescence.

The life cycle of Uromyces appendiculatus is complex and involves multiple spore stages, allowing the fungus to survive in plant debris as teliospores or mycelium. In warmer climates, urediniospores can serve as a primary inoculum, enabling the pathogen to cycle continuously as long as host plants are available.

Favorable conditions for development include mild temperatures (around 18–25°C) and extended periods of high humidity or leaf wetness, such as dew or frequent rainfall. These conditions are optimal for spore germination and rapid infection, making the disease highly infectious during periods of overcast, humid weather.

The economic impact of bean rust can be devastating, causing significant yield losses ranging from 20% to over 50% in severe outbreaks. The reduction in photosynthetic area results in smaller, shriveled seeds and reduced pod count, which significantly affects both the quantity and quality of the final harvest.

  • Implementing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Removing and destroying infected crop residues after harvest.
  • Managing irrigation to avoid prolonged leaf wetness.
