Clover rust

Uromyces trifolii-repentis

Description

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen
Uromyces trifolii-repentis is a fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, and order Pucciniales. It is an obligate biotrophic parasite that specifically infects members of the Fabaceae family, primarily focusing on clover species such as white and red clover.

Diseases and host plants
The fungus causes a disease commonly known as clover rust. The infection is characterized by the appearance of numerous reddish-brown, circular pustules, known as uredinia, on both surfaces of the leaflets, as well as on petioles and stems. Severe infection leads to chlorosis and the premature death of the affected plant tissues.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of the pathogen is complex and typically involves several spore stages, including aecia, uredinia, telia, and basidia. Urediniospores are the primary agents of secondary spread, allowing the disease to propagate rapidly during the growing season through wind dispersal. The fungus survives the winter primarily as teliospores or mycelium within the debris of the host plant.

Conditions for development and impact
Favorable conditions for rust development include mild temperatures (18–22°C) and high humidity, such as periods of heavy dew or frequent rainfall. The infection significantly reduces the photosynthetic area of the leaves, causing a decrease in biomass production. Additionally, rusted clover has lower protein content and decreased digestibility, which diminishes its overall nutritional value for livestock.

Management and control measures

  • Practicing crop rotation and maintaining spatial separation from older infected stands.
  • Selecting and planting resistant clover cultivars whenever available.
  • Implementing timely mowing to remove infected biomass and break the infection cycle.
  • Applying balanced fertilization, particularly potassium, to strengthen plant immunity.
  • Using fungicide applications in seed production fields when disease pressure is high.
