Description

Beet root tumor (caused by Urophlyctis leproides, also known as Physoderma leproides) is a soil-borne fungal disease that primarily affects sugar beets and other members of the Amaranthaceae family. The pathogen is classified within the phylum Chytridiomycota and is a specialized parasite that thrives in moist environmental conditions.

The disease is characterized by the development of abnormal, tumor-like galls on the roots and crown of the beet plant. Initially, these growths are whitish or cream-colored, but they eventually turn dark brown or black as the tissue decomposes. This destruction of the root structure significantly reduces the yield and the sugar content of the crop, rendering the roots unsuitable for processing.

The life cycle of Urophlyctis leproides is heavily dependent on soil moisture. The fungus survives in the soil as resting spores (zoosporangia) for several years. When environmental conditions are wet, these spores release motile zoospores that migrate through soil water to infect the roots. Inside the plant, the fungus stimulates excessive cell division, leading to the formation of the characteristic tumors.

Spread of the pathogen occurs mainly through infested soil adhering to machinery, tools, or through the movement of contaminated water. Areas with poor drainage, low-lying fields, and regions experiencing frequent heavy rainfall during the growing season are at the highest risk for severe outbreaks of the disease.

Effective management and control strategies for this pathogen are essential for minimizing economic losses:

  • Implement long-term crop rotation schemes, avoiding susceptible crops for at least 4–5 years.
  • Improve field drainage to prevent the accumulation of stagnant water where zoospores flourish.
  • Ensure rigorous sanitization of farming equipment when moving between different fields to prevent the spread of soil-borne inoculum.
  • Monitor and manage weed populations, particularly those within the Amaranthaceae family, which may harbor the pathogen.
  • Prioritize the selection of resistant varieties if available in the specific region.
