Systematic position: The causative agent of barley loose smut is the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago nuda (Jens.) Rostr., which belongs to the order Ustilaginales. It is an obligate, biotrophic fungus that specifically infects barley plants. This pathogen is known for its ability to systemically colonize the host plant from germination to heading.
Diseases and crops: The disease manifests during the heading stage, where the entire ear is replaced by a mass of dark-brown, powdery teliospores. Unlike covered smut, the membrane surrounding the spore mass ruptures almost immediately upon emergence, allowing the spores to be wind-dispersed. The fungus is host-specific, primarily affecting Hordeum vulgare.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by floral infection. Airborne spores land on the stigma during flowering, germinate, and penetrate the ovary. The fungus establishes itself as dormant mycelium within the embryo of the developing seed. There are no external symptoms on the mature seed, making it difficult to detect without specialized laboratory tests.
Conditions and impact: Infection is favored by mild, moist weather during the anthesis of the barley crop. The impact of Ustilago nuda is direct: it causes complete destruction of the grain in affected ears. Because the disease is systemic, infected plants produce no grain, directly impacting the final yield and reducing the quality of seed lots for subsequent years.
Control measures: Management of loose smut relies heavily on preventing the planting of infected seeds. Because the fungus is located inside the seed embryo, conventional contact fungicides are ineffective. Effective control strategies include:
- Using certified, disease-free seed stocks.
- Seed treatment with systemic fungicides that have embryo-penetrating capabilities.
- Monitoring fields during the heading stage for certification purposes.
- Planting resistant barley cultivars as the primary long-term management strategy.
