White clover (Trifolium repens), while beneficial as a forage crop, is scientifically recognized as a major reservoir for various plant pathogens. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and functions as a long-term host for viruses, bacteria, and fungal diseases. Its role as a pathogen reservoir makes it a significant risk factor in modern agriculture, as it often harbors infections that spread to economically valuable crops.

The plant is specifically known for hosting viruses such as White Clover Mosaic Virus (WCmV), Clover Yellow Vein Virus, and several other legume-infecting pathogens. These viruses cause mosaic patterns, stunting, leaf malformation, and yield loss in beans, peas, alfalfa, and various horticultural crops. Because the host (clover) remains largely tolerant, the infection can persist in a field undetected for several growing seasons.

The biology of pathogen spread via white clover is primarily mediated by insect vectors. Aphids, thrips, and other sucking insects feed on the infected sap of the clover and subsequently transmit the virions to adjacent crop plants. The pathogen survives in the clover's stolons and root system during winter, ensuring an immediate source of infection at the beginning of the next growing season.

Favorable conditions for the spread of these pathogens include high humidity and optimal temperatures that favor both the vigorous growth of clover and the life cycles of insect vectors. Increased population density of white clover in the field margins acts as a direct bridge for the transmission of viral loads, significantly increasing the probability of regional outbreaks of plant diseases.

Managing the risk posed by white clover requires proactive phytosanitary measures. To control its impact as a pathogen carrier, agronomists recommend the following strategies:

  • Elimination of clover in field margins and buffer zones.
  • Use of targeted herbicides to maintain a weed-free environment in main crops.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focusing on controlling aphid and thrips populations.
  • Use of virus-indexed, certified seeds to reduce initial susceptibility.
  • Implementing buffer crops that are not hosts for the specific viruses present.
