Taxonomy and Pathogen Nature: Xylophilus ampelinus is a gram-negative aerobic bacterium belonging to the family Xylophilaceae. It is an obligate plant parasite that targets the vascular system and tissues of grapevines (Vitis species), specifically causing severe localized necrosis.

Host Plants and Diseases: The primary disease caused by this pathogen is bacterial necrosis, also commonly known as bacterial blight of grape. It affects all aerial parts of the vine, including canes, leaves, and clusters. The symptoms are often characterized by black, longitudinal necrotic streaks on shoots, which can eventually lead to the girdling and death of the affected plant parts.

Biology and Life Cycle: The bacterium overwinters within the infected woody tissues of the grapevine, particularly in the deep bark and vascular bundles. As temperatures rise during the spring and humidity increases, the bacteria multiply and emerge, spreading through splashing rain, irrigation water, and infected tools during pruning or grafting activities.

Environmental Factors and Impact: The development of bacterial blight is strongly correlated with cool, wet weather conditions during the early growth stages of the vine. The pathogen thrives in high-moisture environments. The economic impact is significant, as it leads to reduced fruit quality, decreased winter hardiness, and, in severe cases, the complete decline and death of the grapevine stock.

Control and Management: Effective management relies on strict phytosanitary measures rather than direct chemical cures. Key practices include:

  • Sourcing healthy, pathogen-free planting stock from certified nurseries;
  • Systematic removal and destruction of infected wood to minimize inoculum sources;
  • Sanitization of pruning shears and other tools using disinfectants;
  • Protective application of copper-based bactericides during the dormant and early growth periods to mitigate surface transmission.
