Description
Systematic position. The Austrian beetle (Anisoplia austriaca) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest that poses a significant threat to cereal production throughout Europe and Asia.
Affected crops. The pest primarily targets wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Adult beetles are specialized in feeding on the milky and dough stages of grain, which directly impacts the yield volume and quality. The larval stage, often called a white grub, resides in the soil and feeds on the root systems of various cereal plants and grasses.
Biology and lifecycle. The development cycle of this beetle usually spans two years. Winter is spent as larvae buried deep within the soil. In the following spring, as temperatures rise, the larvae move upward, pupate, and emerge as adults in early summer. This emergence is synchronized with the critical phase of grain filling in the wheat ears.
Damage and economic impact. The adult stage is the most destructive. Beetles swarm the fields and consume the developing grains; they are also known for dislodging grains from the ears, which leads to immediate yield loss. During outbreaks, the damage to a wheat crop can be severe, often resulting in significant economic losses for farmers.
Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Anisoplia populations:
- Deep autumn plowing to bring larvae to the surface, where they are exposed to natural predators and weather.
- Crop rotation to break the pest's two-year development cycle.
- Timely harvesting to minimize the duration of the beetle's feeding window.
- Application of registered insecticides during the peak of adult migration into the fields.
