Description
Systematic position. The strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus signatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets reproductive structures of berry-producing plants.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this weevil are cultivated strawberries and raspberries. It occasionally infests other members of the Rosaceae family, such as blackberries, blueberries, and even wild roses, using their buds for feeding and oviposition during the spring season.
Biology and life cycle. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil debris or under leaf litter. In the spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge to feed on young foliage. As flower buds develop, females puncture them to lay eggs and subsequently sever the pedicel, which prevents the bud from opening and creates an ideal environment for the developing larva.
Damage and economic impact. The larval stage is the most destructive, as the larvae feed on the internal tissues of the bud, causing it to wilt, turn brown, and eventually fall off. This damage directly reduces the potential yield, and in severe infestations, a large portion of the strawberry or raspberry harvest can be lost to this pest.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) for this beetle involves sanitation practices, such as removing debris where adults hibernate, and mechanical soil cultivation. Chemical control is effective but must be applied before the flowers open to prevent harm to essential pollinators. Resistant cultivars and early harvesting schedules are also recommended strategies.
