Cabbage stem weevil

Systematic position: Baris coerulescens belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). It is a specialized pest that is particularly problematic in regions where intensive cultivation of cruciferous crops occurs, often causing severe physiological stress to the plants it infests.

Host plants: The primary host range includes members of the Brassicaceae family. This includes various varieties of cabbage, radish, turnip, rutabaga, mustard, and oilseed rape. The pest is highly adapted to both cultivated crops and wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as alternative food sources during the transition periods between planting seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as an adult beetle in the soil or under surface debris. During the spring, adults emerge to feed on the foliage before mating. Females create small cavities in the stems or leaf petioles and deposit their eggs inside. The larvae bore into the interior of the plant stem, where they feed on the internal tissues before exiting to pupate in the soil.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The larval feeding stage is the most destructive. By tunneling through the interior of the stem, larvae disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, wilting, and stem deformation. In severe cases, the structural integrity of the stem is lost, leading to total plant failure.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is recommended to control Baris coerulescens. Effective strategies include crop rotation, keeping fields free of cruciferous weeds, and performing deep autumn plowing to disturb the soil and reduce overwintering populations. If pest pressure is high, chemical control using systemic insecticides applied during the early developmental stages of the plant can be necessary to prevent economic losses.
