Scaly weevil

Barynotus squamosus

Description

Taxonomic classification. The scaly weevil (Barynotus squamosus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a beetle species recognized for its distinct scale-covered elytra, which provide excellent camouflage against soil and plant debris, making it a difficult pest to spot in the field.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets legumes (Fabaceae), with alfalfa, clover, peas, and vetch being the most susceptible. In some instances, it may also attack various berry bushes and wild plants, extending its range beyond conventional crop fields and complicating eradication efforts.

Biology and life cycle. Barynotus squamosus typically has a life cycle involving soil-dwelling larvae. The females lay eggs near the base of host plants. Upon hatching, the legless larvae burrow into the soil to feed on roots. The life cycle can span several months, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels, which dictates the intensity of the infestation in a given season.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Adult weevils cause foliage damage by eating irregular notches along the leaf margins. The most severe economic damage, however, is caused by larvae feeding on root systems. This underground activity results in poor water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted plant development and significant yield losses in forage and grain legumes.

Protection and control measures. Managing the scaly weevil requires a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies. Key practices include:

  • Crop rotation with non-host plants to break the life cycle.
  • Deep tillage in the autumn to expose and destroy soil-dwelling larvae.
  • Monitoring populations through nocturnal field inspections.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the peak activity of adult weevils if economic thresholds are exceeded.
Integrated pest management remains the most effective way to keep populations below damaging levels.
