Description

Systematic position. Bitylenchus maximus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Telotylenchidae. It is a microscopic worm that acts as an obligate ectoparasite on the root systems of various agricultural and wild plants.

Affected crops. This species of nematode demonstrates high ecological plasticity. The primary targets for infestation include cereal crops (wheat, barley), maize, as well as several vegetable and forage grass species. The pest’s impact is observed in field conditions across a wide range of agricultural crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Bitylenchus maximus consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. The parasite primarily inhabits the rhizosphere of the soil. Each stage transition involves molting. Reproduction occurs within the soil environment, where the nematodes actively migrate in search of young roots to feed upon.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity. The nematode causes damage by piercing root cells with its stylet and secreting enzymes that facilitate feeding. This damage impairs the root system's ability to absorb water and nutrients, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and reduced yield. In cases of high infestation, thinning of crops and general plant suppression are common symptoms.

Control measures. Controlling this pest is difficult due to its cryptic behavior in the soil. Key management strategies include crop rotation using non-host plants (e.g., certain legumes or rapeseed).
