Description
The Eucalyptus psyllid, known scientifically as Boreioglycaspis, is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Aphalaridae (order Hemiptera). Originating from regions where eucalyptus thrives, this pest has become a significant problem in many global forestry plantations, often causing economic losses in timber and decorative nursery industries.
This pest exclusively attacks Eucalyptus species. It targets young leaves and tender stems to feed on the phloem sap. Heavy infestations can lead to significant physiological stress, reduced carbon assimilation, premature leaf drop, and in severe cases, the death of young trees or stunted growth in mature specimens.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The nymphs are particularly notable for secreting a protective white, waxy lerp (a covering) that shelters them from predators and environmental desiccation. This waxy coating is a diagnostic feature used by agronomists and foresters to identify the presence of the insect in the field.
The impact of Boreioglycaspis is twofold. Direct damage occurs through sap removal, leading to chlorosis and stunted growth. Indirect damage is caused by the production of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This mold covers the leaf surface, severely inhibiting photosynthesis and impacting the overall health and aesthetic value of the plantation.
