Systematic position: Boreioglycaspis melaleucae belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae (jumping plant lice). It is a highly host-specific insect that has co-evolved with Melaleuca species, originating from their native Australian range.
Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the broad-leaved paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia). In regions where the plant has been introduced, the psyllid can become a major concern for landscape maintenance and nursery production due to its ability to proliferate rapidly on susceptible hosts.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females lay eggs on young, tender foliage. Upon hatching, nymphs begin feeding on plant sap. A distinctive feature is the production of white, waxy, lerp-like structures that provide shelter for the nymphs, protecting them from predators and desiccation.
