Flat mites

Flat mites (genus Brevipalpus) are a group of microscopic plant-feeding mites belonging to the Tenuipalpidae family. Known as "false spider mites," they are significant pests in both agricultural and ornamental horticulture. Unlike spider mites, they do not produce silk webs, which often allows them to go unnoticed until extensive damage has already occurred on the host plants.

Systematically, these mites are classified under the order Acariformes. Their bodies are distinctly flattened, allowing them to hide in minute crevices, such as leaf axils, bark scales, or under bud scales. This morphological adaptation makes them difficult to target with contact pesticides, as they remain sheltered from direct exposure to chemical sprays during standard applications.

The host range of Brevipalpus is vast, including citrus, tea, vines, and various greenhouse ornamentals. Their primary damage is caused by piercing and sucking plant sap, which leads to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and in some species, the transmission of serious plant viruses. Such viral infections can lead to severe stunting, leaf distortion, and significant economic losses in commercial production.

The life cycle of the flat mite is relatively short and consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions (warm and dry weather), a generation can develop in just a few weeks. The ability of females to lay eggs directly into the plant tissue protects the eggs from environmental stressors and many predators, facilitating rapid population build-ups.

Management of these pests requires a multifaceted approach due to their cryptic behavior. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling populations effectively. Recommended control measures include:

• Application of systemic or translaminar acaricides.
• Strict sanitation protocols to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
• Biological control using predatory mites (e.g., Phytoseiidae).
• Maintenance of plant health to improve tolerance against mite feeding.
