Azores flat mite

Systematic position. Brevipalpus azores belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly referred to as flat mites or false spider mites. Unlike the well-known spider mites, these pests do not produce silk webbing. Their flattened body shape is a structural adaptation that allows them to thrive in narrow crevices, such as leaf axils or under the plant's cuticle, making them difficult to detect.

Host plants. This mite is considered a polyphagous pest, capable of infesting a variety of ornamental plants, citrus trees, and specific exotic species. Because they occupy diverse ecological niches within a plant, they can cause widespread damage in nurseries, botanical gardens, and commercial fruit orchards if left unchecked.

Biology and lifecycle. The developmental lifecycle of the Azores flat mite consists of an egg stage, followed by larval, protonymph, and deutonymph stages before reaching adulthood. The rate of development is heavily dependent on ambient temperature. In warm environments, multiple generations can occur annually, leading to rapid population explosions during peak growing seasons.

Damage and severity. Feeding by Brevipalpus azores extracts cell sap, causing characteristic localized chlorosis and the development of silver, bronze, or necrotic spotting on foliage. Severe infestations result in stunted growth, leaf curling, and premature leaf drop. This damage significantly weakens the plant's vigor and can lead to total yield loss in sensitive high-value crops.

Control measures. Management of this pest requires a multifaceted approach. Chemical control involving specific acaricides is necessary during peak infestations; however, it is critical to rotate chemical classes to manage resistance. Cultural practices, such as maintaining optimal plant health and humidity levels, as well as the implementation of strict quarantine procedures for new plant imports, are essential components of an effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
