Flat mite

Brevipalpus feresi is a member of the Tenuipalpidae family, commonly known as false spider mites or flat mites. Unlike the well-known Tetranychidae family, these mites do not spin webs, making them cryptic and difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation. They are typically found on the undersides of leaves, often near the veins, where they pierce the plant tissue.

This species primarily attacks a variety of ornamental plants and specific woody crops. In nursery environments, they can cause widespread economic damage due to their rapid reproduction rate in enclosed spaces. Plants suffering from physiological stress or water deficiency are particularly susceptible to severe outbreaks of this mite population.

The damage caused by Brevipalpus feresi involves feeding on the cell contents, resulting in chlorosis, necrotic spotting, and premature leaf drop. The removal of nutrients from the leaves severely impacts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and decreased aesthetic value for ornamental varieties.
