Description
Essig's flat mite (Brevipalpus essigi) is a member of the Tenuipalpidae family, within the order Trombidiformes. Known for their extremely small and flattened bodies, these mites are specialized plant feeders that can cause significant physiological stress to their host plants by continuously depleting them of sap.
The pest primarily targets citrus crops, but it also colonizes a range of other subtropical and ornamental plants. Because they are often found in tight crevices, leaf axils, or on the undersides of leaves, their presence is frequently overlooked until the symptoms of damage become widespread across the plantation.
The life cycle of this mite consists of several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The entire life cycle can be completed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks depending on the temperature and humidity levels. Their reproductive rate is notably high in warm, stable climates, allowing for multiple generations per year.
The damage caused by Brevipalpus essigi manifests as chlorotic spots on leaves, which subsequently evolve into necrotic areas, leading to leaf distortion and premature defoliation. Furthermore, the mites often infest the fruit, causing surface scarring and lesions that significantly reduce the market value and quality of the harvest.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. This includes regular field scouting to detect early infestations, the use of targeted acaricides, and the maintenance of plant health through proper irrigation and fertilization. To prevent resistance, it is critical to rotate different classes of chemical control agents throughout the season.
