Ferragut flat mite

Brevipalpus ferraguti belongs to the Tenuipalpidae family, commonly known as flat mites or false spider mites. Unlike typical spider mites, they do not produce silk webbing, making their detection challenging for growers. These microscopic pests are distributed primarily in warm climate zones where they can thrive on various perennial crops.

These mites are highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of botanical hosts, with a particular preference for citrus orchards and ornamental plants. They feed primarily on the epidermal cells of leaves, stems, and fruits. Due to their minute size, infestations often go unnoticed until significant plant damage becomes visible to the naked eye.

The life cycle of the mite consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal temperatures, the development rate is rapid, allowing for multiple generations within a single season. The mites typically overwinter as fertilized females in protected niches such as bark crevices, ready to re-emerge as soon as temperatures rise in the spring.

The feeding activity of Brevipalpus ferraguti results in characteristic symptoms such as chlorotic spotting, bronzing of leaf surfaces, and tissue necrosis. On citrus fruits, feeding causes scabbing or silvering, which lowers the commercial quality of the produce. In severe cases, infestations can lead to leaf drop, stunted growth, and reduced overall plant vigor.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies. Growers should perform regular field inspections using hand lenses to detect early symptoms. Control measures include:

• Application of selective acaricides during peak activity periods.
• Maintaining optimal plant health to enhance natural resistance.
• Rotation of chemical agents to prevent the development of pesticide resistance in mite populations.
