Description
The Brevipalpus browningi species belongs to the Tenuipalpidae family, commonly known as flat mites or false spider mites. These pests are extremely small, characterized by their flat body shape, which allows them to hide within crevices of the plant epidermis, making them difficult to detect until significant damage has occurred.
This mite is a polyphagous pest that targets various agricultural and horticultural crops, including citrus, grapes, and woody ornamentals. They primarily inhabit the undersides of leaves, young shoots, and stems. By piercing the plant cells and feeding on the sap, they cause physiological stress and damage to the host plant tissues.
The life cycle follows a standard pattern for the family: eggs, larvae, protonymph, deutonymph, and adults. The duration of this cycle depends heavily on temperature; warmer conditions drastically shorten the time between generations, allowing for multiple outbreaks within a single growing season, especially in greenhouses or warm climates.
Damage symptoms usually manifest as chlorosis, necrosis of the leaf blade, and tissue scarring. In severe infestations, the mites cause premature leaf drop and the stunting of young shoots. Furthermore, feeding on developing fruits often results in disfiguring scars and scabs, which significantly decrease the quality and market value of the produce.
