Brevipalpus hondurani is a species of mite belonging to the Tenuipalpidae family, commonly referred to as flat mites. These microscopic pests are distinct from the well-known spider mites because they do not produce significant webbing, which often allows them to remain undetected until heavy infestation has occurred.

Taxonomically, this pest falls under the order Trombidiformes. They are obligate phytophagous organisms known to infest a variety of plant hosts, particularly in warmer climates. They prefer to feed on the leaf underside, utilizing their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract vital cell contents from the plant tissues.

The life cycle of the species consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Temperature and humidity levels are critical drivers of their population dynamics. In optimal environments, the mite population grows exponentially, leading to rapid colonization of new leaf surfaces and potential spread to neighboring plants.

Damage symptoms usually manifest as chlorotic spotting, stippling, and eventual necrosis of the leaf tissue. Persistent feeding weakens the plant, resulting in reduced photosynthetic efficiency, stunted growth, and premature senescence of foliage. In severe cases, the damage may lead to the total loss of marketable produce.

Effective management strategies include the rotation of acaricides to prevent resistance, as well as cultural control practices. Sanitation is vital: pruning infested branches and destroying plant debris helps curb the population.
