Description

Systematic position: The Citrus flat mite (Brevipalpus lewisi) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tenuipalpidae. These mites are extremely small, flat, and often yellowish or reddish in color, making them difficult to detect without a microscope or a high-magnification hand lens.

Host plants: This mite is a serious pest of citrus fruits, including lemons, oranges, and tangerines. It also causes significant damage to grapevines, walnuts, pomegranates, and certain ornamental plants. It is particularly prevalent in warm, arid regions where it can thrive on various host crops.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The development speed is highly dependent on temperature, with warmer conditions accelerating the reproductive rate significantly. Overwintering occurs mainly as adult females hiding in bark crevices or under plant scales.

Damage and economic impact: The mites feed on plant tissues by piercing cells with their mouthparts. On citrus fruit, this feeding results in a silvering or browning of the rind, which drastically reduces the commercial value of the harvest. On foliage, damage leads to leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant.

Protection measures: Management of the Citrus flat mite requires a combination of monitoring and chemical or cultural control:
