Commonly known as the red and black flat mite, it is a significant agricultural pest characterized by its extremely flat body structure, which allows it to hide in the microscopic crevices of plant surfaces.

Host range: This mite is a highly polyphagous pest with a vast host range. It infests a wide variety of greenhouse plants, nursery stock, and outdoor ornamental crops. Major hosts include citrus trees, roses, camellias, hibiscus, and a variety of orchid species, making it a major concern for both commercial growers and private collectors.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Brevipalpus obovatus consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The total development time is temperature-dependent and typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks. These mites thrive in warm, dry environments, and in heated greenhouses, they can continue their reproductive cycle throughout the entire year without entering diapause.

Type of damage and economic impact: The mites feed by piercing the plant cells, primarily on the undersides of leaves, stems, and fruits. Visible symptoms include chlorotic spots, leaf bronzing, and severe distortion of young foliage.
