Orchid flat mite

Systematic position. Brevipalpus oncidii belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as false spider mites or flat mites, within the order Trombidiformes. These mites are microscopic and pose a severe threat to the health and aesthetic value of various ornamental plants, particularly in indoor environments.

Host plants. As indicated by its name, this mite is a major pest of the Oncidium orchid genus. However, its host range extends to a variety of other tropical and indoor plants, such as Anthurium and Spathiphyllum species, making it a persistent problem in commercial greenhouses and private indoor collections.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle encompasses egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, such as the consistent temperatures found in greenhouses, the life cycle is completed rapidly. Females lay eggs in clusters within crevices on leaf surfaces, which contributes to their survival against standard topical treatments.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness. Unlike spider mites, Brevipalpus oncidii does not produce webbing. Their feeding causes the cells to collapse, resulting in chlorotic patches that turn necrotic or «rusty» over time. In severe infestations, the damage causes significant leaf disfigurement, stunting of growth, and may lead to the total loss of the plant's ornamental appeal.

Control measures. Effective management requires early detection and the use of targeted acaricides. Key strategies include:

• Routine monitoring using a hand lens to inspect the underside of leaves.
• Maintaining proper humidity levels to reduce the mite's reproductive rate.
• Applying systemic and contact acaricides with different modes of action to manage resistance.
• Strict quarantine for all new plant introductions to prevent the spread of the pest.
