Description
The papaya flat mite (Brevipalpus papayensis) is a member of the Tenuipalpidae family within the order Trombidiformes. Unlike many other mites, flat mites are generally slow-moving and exhibit a flattened body shape, which allows them to hide effectively in the crevices of plant stems, leaf undersides, and fruit surfaces. This morphological adaptation makes them difficult to manage in commercial fruit production.
The primary hosts for this pest include plants of the Caricaceae family, particularly papaya, where they cause significant agricultural disruption. Besides papaya, the mite can colonize a variety of other tropical and ornamental crops, often spreading through infected nursery stock. Their ability to remain undetected during the early stages of infestation poses a major risk to clean fields.
The life cycle of Brevipalpus papayensis involves egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Development is heavily influenced by environmental temperature and relative humidity. In tropical climates, reproduction continues throughout the year, with females laying eggs in protected niches on the host plant. This continuous breeding cycle allows populations to reach damaging levels very rapidly if left unmonitored.
Feeding damage occurs as the mites pierce plant cells to extract sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunting, and the development of necrotic lesions on leaves. On fruit, the damage manifests as corky, brownish patches, which significantly lowers the marketability of the produce. Furthermore, some Brevipalpus species are confirmed vectors of plant viruses, adding a layer of phytosanitary risk beyond direct physical damage.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling this mite species:

- Systematic application of acaricides, focusing on rotation to prevent resistance.
