False spider mite

Systematic position. Brevipalpus pseudocuneatus belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tenuipalpidae. Commonly known as flat mites or false spider mites, these microscopic organisms are significant pests in both tropical and temperate horticultural systems, often overlooked due to their small size and lack of silken webbing.

Host range. This pest exhibits a broad host range, primarily affecting woody perennial plants. It is frequently documented on various fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and citrus crops. The mites thrive on the underside of leaves, green stems, and occasionally on the surface of developing fruits, utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and relative humidity. Females lay eggs in clusters or crevices on the host plant surface, ensuring survival through favorable environmental conditions that allow for multiple generations per year.

Damage and economic significance. Feeding by Brevipalpus pseudocuneatus causes localized cell death and chlorosis on leaves. Infected leaves often turn yellow and fall prematurely, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. On fruits, feeding damage results in necrotic spots, russeting, and corky lesions, which significantly downgrade the aesthetic and market value of the harvest.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. Cultural practices such as pruning infested branches and maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization are fundamental. In cases of high infestation, the application of selective acaricides is necessary. It is highly recommended to rotate chemical classes to avoid the rapid selection of resistant populations.
