Description
Cardiaspina is a genus of psyllids, or plant-lice, belonging to the family Psyllidae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are highly specialized sap-feeders that have become significant pests in regions where their host plants are cultivated for forestry or ornamental purposes.
The primary host plants for Cardiaspina are various species of the genus Eucalyptus. The impact of these pests is particularly severe in monoculture plantations, where high concentrations of host trees facilitate the rapid spread of the insect population throughout the forest canopy.
The biology of this pest is marked by the nymphal stage building distinctive protective covers, known as lerps, on the underside of eucalyptus leaves. These structures are made of wax and crystallized honeydew, serving as a shield against predators, environmental stressors, and chemical treatments during the feeding process.
