Description
The Cenopalpus irani is a species of flat mite belonging to the Tenuipalpidae family, order Trombidiformes. These mites are microscopic and are frequently found on the undersides of leaves or within crevices on the bark, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation.
This pest primarily infests various fruit tree species, with apple trees being particularly vulnerable. It is well-adapted to environments with arid and warm climates, where it thrives and can sustain high population densities if left unmanaged by growers.
The biology and lifecycle of this mite include stages of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Because they undergo multiple generations per growing season, the population can explode quickly, especially during periods of prolonged drought and high temperatures that stress the host plants.
Damage caused by Cenopalpus irani occurs as the mites feed on plant cell sap. This activity causes chlorosis, leaf curling, necrosis, and premature defoliation. Consequently, the photosynthetic capacity of the tree is significantly reduced, which stunts growth and leads to lower fruit quality and yield.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to reduce mite pressure. Growers should focus on the following protective measures:
- Targeted application of acaricides at the early stages of infestation to prevent population spikes.
- Dormant oil sprays to target overwintering populations on tree bark.
- Regular monitoring of orchards using magnification tools during the spring and summer.
