Description
The flat mite (Cenopalpus pulcher) is a significant pest belonging to the family Tenuipalpidae. Unlike common spider mites, these pests do not spin webs, which often leads to late detection of an infestation. They are notorious in commercial orchards and home gardens for their ability to thrive in warm, dry climates, causing substantial economic losses if not managed properly.
This mite species is a polyphagous pest that attacks a wide range of deciduous fruit trees. Its primary hosts include apples, pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, and walnuts. The pests prefer to colonize the underside of leaves and young green shoots, feeding on plant sap and weakening the overall vigor of the host plant.
The biology of Cenopalpus pulcher involves overwintering as fertilized adult females hiding within bark crevices or under bud scales. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and begin the egg-laying process. The mite undergoes several generations throughout the growing season, with population peaks usually observed during hot, dry summer months.
Damage is characterized by chlorosis of the leaves, which eventually turn bronzed or grayish-brown and may curl. This feeding behavior disrupts the photosynthesis process, causing premature leaf drop and reducing the nutritional reserves of the tree. Consequently, the quality and yield of the fruit are significantly diminished, and the tree may become more susceptible to winter frost damage.
