Stem weevil

Centrinus torquatus is a specialized stem-boring weevil that belongs to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a pest of agricultural crops, particularly those in the Asteraceae family. Its ability to remain hidden inside plant stems makes it a challenging threat for commercial farming operations.

The primary host for this pest is the sunflower. Adult beetles feed on the exterior parts of the plant, but the larval stage causes the most significant agricultural damage. By boring into the core of the stems, the larvae deprive the plant of vital nutrients and water flow, which often goes unnoticed until the plant shows signs of sudden wilting or structural failure.

The life cycle begins with overwintering adults emerging in the spring to feed and mate. Females lay eggs inside the stems or leaf petioles, effectively sealing the larvae inside the host plant. The larvae then undergo development within the stem, feeding on internal tissues throughout their maturation process before eventually pupating inside the damaged stalk.

The damage caused by Centrinus torquatus is both direct and indirect. Direct damage includes the destruction of vascular tissues, which stunts plant growth and reduces seed quality. Indirectly, the internal tunnels created by the larvae weaken the stalk, making the crops highly susceptible to lodging during windy weather, which leads to substantial harvest losses.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Key practices include:

• Deep fall plowing to disrupt the soil-based overwintering sites.
• Strict sanitation and weed control to remove alternative hosts such as wild Asteraceae.
• Monitoring for adult beetle emergence during the early vegetative stages of the crop.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides that can penetrate plant tissues to control internal larvae.
