The three-banded midge (Cricotopus trifasciatus) belongs to the family Chironomidae within the order Diptera. While these insects are often harmless in natural aquatic ecosystems, they can become significant agricultural pests in flooded fields, particularly in rice cultivation.
The primary hosts for this pest are young rice plants. During the early stages of growth, the plants are highly vulnerable to the feeding activities of the larvae, which construct protective tubes using silk and environmental debris, causing structural damage to the submerged portions of the crop.
The biology of Cricotopus trifasciatus is intricately linked to aquatic environments. The life cycle comprises egg, four larval stages, pupal stage, and the adult fly. Development is highly sensitive to water temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the maturation rate of consecutive generations.
