Description
Cryptoneossa (Cryptoneossa) belongs to the family Psyllidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized pests whose biology is intrinsically linked to plants of specific families, primarily in regions of natural distribution and introduction of eucalyptus forests.
The primary crops susceptible to this pest are species within the genus Eucalyptus. The pest has adapted to feed on the sap of young shoots and leaves, making it a significant threat to forest nurseries and young plantations where tree growth rates are critical for forestry management.
The life cycle includes the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females lay eggs directly onto the tender tissue of leaf blades. As they progress through the nymphal stages, the pest feeds actively, secreting specific substances that often become a substrate for the growth of sooty mold, which further suppresses the physiological state of the plant.
The damage caused manifests as leaf deformation, curling of young shoots, and premature leaf drop. The pest depletes the tree by sucking nutrient-rich sap, leading to chlorosis and a significant reduction in biomass accumulation. During outbreaks, populations of Cryptoneossa can cause the decline of entire forest stands.
Protection measures include a comprehensive approach based on agrotechnical and biological methods. Recommended practices include:
- monitoring populations using yellow sticky traps;
- maintaining high plant vigor to enhance natural immune responses;
- applying systemic insecticides in cases of high pest density;
