Cryptotermes

Systematic position: the genus Cryptotermes belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae (drywood termites). These social insects are highly specialized, spending their entire life cycle within dry wood without requiring direct connection to the soil or external water sources.

Target materials and damage: Cryptotermes species primarily infest furniture, structural timber, and wooden artifacts. They can also damage ornamental trees and shrubs. Because they do not need to build mud tubes to reach the ground, their presence is often overlooked until significant structural degradation has occurred.

Biology and life cycle: the colony lifecycle is entirely internal. Winged reproductives, known as alates, swarm and penetrate the surface of untreated wood to establish new colonies. Growth is slow, and a single colony can remain active within a piece of timber for many years before external signs appear.

Damage patterns and economic impact: the most characteristic sign of infestation is the presence of frass—small, hard, hex-shaped fecal pellets pushed out of tiny galleries. Internally, the insects consume the wood, leaving a thin outer shell intact while honeycombing the interior, which can lead to catastrophic structural failure.

Control measures: management strategies include whole-structure fumigation, which is often the most effective method for eradicating widespread infestations. For localized issues, direct injection of borate-based or other approved insecticides into gallery tunnels is used. Preventive measures involve the use of treated timber and sealing all potential entry points in construction.
