Description

Glyptotermes is a genus of termites belonging to the family Kalotermitidae, commonly known as drywood termites. These insects are significant pests that inhabit the wood they consume. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require moisture from the soil, allowing them to establish fully contained colonies within the structural tissues of living trees and woody crops.

The host range of Glyptotermes is extensive, impacting various agricultural and forest species. They are frequently recorded in tropical fruit trees, coffee, cocoa, and various timber-producing plants. By boring into the heartwood and sapwood, they create internal galleries that compromise the tree's health and structural integrity over time.

The biology of these termites is highly specialized. A single colony consists of different castes, including nymphs, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. Their lifecycle involves a dispersal flight during which winged reproductives mate and seek suitable entry points, such as bark cracks or pruning wounds, to initiate new colonies inside the host plant's internal structures.

Damage caused by Glyptotermes is deceptive because it occurs primarily inside the plant, leaving the outer bark intact for a long period. As the termite colony grows, the internal network of tunnels expands, which disrupts water and nutrient transport. This leads to symptoms such as stunted growth, branch dieback, increased susceptibility to wind damage, and ultimately tree death.

Effective management requires integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to detect and neutralize infestations early. Recommended actions include:

  • Routine field inspections to identify frass (fecal pellets) or structural weaknesses in tree trunks.
  • Sanitary pruning and the removal of heavily infested plant tissues.
  • Application of targeted insecticides or wood preservatives to prevent colonization.
  • Utilization of bait stations with slow-acting toxicants that are shared throughout the termite colony.
