Description

Cryptotermes primus belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae. These insects are classified as drywood termites, which means they do not require contact with the soil to survive. They thrive in dry wood, extracting all necessary moisture through their metabolic processes.

They infest various wooden materials, including structural components of agricultural buildings, greenhouses, and storage facilities. By targeting the cellulose-rich heartwood of structures, these termites compromise the physical integrity of wooden buildings, posing a significant long-term economic risk to farms and infrastructure.

The biology of this species is unique as it lacks a true worker caste. Instead, nymphal stages, known as pseudergates, perform the labor within the colony. The cycle involves egg-laying by the primary reproductives, followed by the development of nymphs that inhabit the galleries carved inside the wood.

Damage is typically identified by the presence of frass (fecal pellets), which are small, uniform, and granular in appearance. These pellets are pushed out of small kick-out holes in the wood. Internally, the termites create elaborate, smooth-walled galleries that hollow out the wood while leaving the exterior surface intact.

Effective management requires a multi-layered approach. Key strategies include:

  • Structural fumigation for severe infestations.
  • Application of borate-based wood preservatives to prevent colonization.
  • Local injection treatments for targeted areas.
  • Sealing cracks and crevices to restrict entry points for winged reproductives.
