Cryptotermes secundus belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Kalotermitidae. Known as a drywood termite, this species is uniquely adapted to thrive without any direct contact with the soil, allowing it to infest timber structures, furniture, and various wooden assets above ground level.
This pest targets a wide variety of wood species, effectively dismantling the structural integrity of buildings. It is considered a significant threat in urban and agricultural environments, as it can be transported through infested furniture or construction materials to new geographical locations.
The biology of the species revolves around a cast-based society where individuals spend their entire life cycle inside the wood. The colony grows within a network of galleries, feeding on cellulose. Once the colony reaches a certain size, alates emerge to swarm and initiate new colonies in surrounding environments.
The damage caused is often difficult to detect in the early stages because the termites consume the interior wood while leaving the outer layer intact. The most common diagnostic feature is the presence of frass (fecal pellets) near the infestation site, which appears as small, dry, granular piles.
