Cryptotermes atratus is a species of termite belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae. Known as a type of drywood termite, this organism does not require soil contact, allowing it to establish colonies directly within dry, structural wood, furniture, and timber products.

This species primarily attacks seasoned wood, including beams, joists, and various household objects. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not build mud tubes; instead, they consume the wood from the inside out, often leaving a thin, intact surface layer, which makes early visual detection significantly more challenging for homeowners.

The biology of Cryptotermes atratus revolves around a colony structure consisting of nymphs, workers, and soldiers. The life cycle begins when winged reproductives swarm, mate, and bore into a piece of wood to start a new colony. The development process is slow, but the colony can persist for many years if the moisture and food source remain stable.

The most recognizable sign of infestation is the presence of frass — dry, fecal pellets dropped by the termites from galleries. These pellets are usually small and uniform in shape. Accumulated frass indicates active tunneling within the wood, signaling that structural integrity may already be compromised.
